Microwave Macaroni and Cheese
While mac and cheese in a mug is the "new viral" recipe, we have been making it for a long time. It is my go to for when the kids want mac and cheese but I don't feel like doing the work of making Baked Mac and Cheese.
This Microwave Macaroni and Cheese is made with real ingredients, a coffee mug and a few minutes in the microwave. No Velveeta or fake cheese here, we like real ingredients and real cheese! LOTS of cheese!
The best part is that this Microwave Macaroni and Cheese is super cheesy just like you want in a homemade mac and cheese but made right in the microwave!

This mac and cheese in a mug is so easy to make and perfect for when you are wanting a quick tasty mac and cheese at lunch time or for a snack!
Mac N Cheese in a Mug
My kids LOVE Easy Mac however I am not a fan because it is not made with real ingredients, ii really do not like fake cheese. I much prefer my kids to eat foods made with real ingredients that I know what is in them. This pushed me to create a homemade Easy Mac recipe that my kids will love and I will love the ingredients that are in it.
This homemade Easy Mac recipe is one that my kids can make on their own if they want to and I can tell you that there are many times I walk into the kitchen and I find them making it because they love it so much.

Best Cheese for Mac and Cheese
I am super picky on my mac and cheese. It must be cheesy. It must be creamy. It must be super flavorful. This Microwave Macaroni and Cheese covers all the things I love about mac and cheese, but made in a coffee mug in the microwave and SUPER Cheesy!
Speaking of cheese I prefer to use cheddar however you can use your favorite cheese including Monteray jack, provolone and parmesan!
If you are wanting your mug mac n cheese to be richer add some butter into the mac and cheese after cooking in the microwave.
Mug Mac and Cheese add ins
After you have made your mac and cheese in the microwave you can easily change up the flavors by adding in some fun addins like veggies, chicken, bacon and more! If you are going to be adding things into your pasta then I suggest that you cook them before you make your mac and cheese.
Tips for Making this Recipe
When you are heating the mug in the microwave the water may boil out a little bit. That is ok, you can use a large coffee mug if you want to to avoid the little bit of bubbling over.
You made need to add more water and cook a minute or two more after heat in the microwave. Depending on how you like your pasta to be.
Use an ovenmit when removing the mug from the microwave, the mug is going to be hot.
We find that fresh shredded cheese works best because it does not have the coating that bagged shredded cheese has. You can use either one and make homemade easy mac in the microwave but we highly suggest using fresh shredded cheese.
Microwave Macaroni and Cheese Ingredients
- 1/3 cup pasta of chose
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese
Homemade Easy Mac Directions
Place your pasta and water into a large mug.
Place the mug in the microwave and cook for 8 to 10 minutes. every 2 minutes take it out and stir.
Once Pasta is fully cooked remove from the microwave and add the milk and cheese and stir well.
Heat in the microwave for an additional minute until the cheese is fully melted.
Remove from the microwave and stir well until all of the cheese and pasta is mixed well.
